As the US government reforms its immigration laws in order to address immigration issues especially in its south border, several European nations have also joined forces in order to resolve the growing problem of illegal immigration in the continent. Though the flood of illegal immigrants is just a problem of a few countries such as Spain and Malta, the European Union views the fight
against illegal immigration as a common responsibility among its members.
As such, nine European nations have vowed last week to support Spain in dealing with its immigration crisis. Based on reports, thousands of Africans clandestinely reach the shores of Canary Islands yearly. In fact, around 7,000 Africans were reported to have arrived in the territory since the start of 2006. The alarming fact is that hundreds of them also die yearly during the voyages as a result of fatigue or calamities. Britain, Finland, Austria, Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Italy, and France have all agreed to provide aircrafts and boats in order to reinforce the maritime patrol of the
Spanish government. The reason why Spain's immigration crisis becomes a common concern is the fact that once the illegal immigrants land the Spanish territory, they could now travel to other EU nations without the need to show their passports.
