Recently, Frontex, which is EU's border agency, has vowed to give 2.1 million euros in order to assist Spain and Malta in fighting against
illegal immigration. The number of illegal immigrants all over Europe has greatly increased during the recent years. As such, European nations like Spain and Malta have resolved to tighten border security their maritime patrol in order to track and prevent illegal immigrants from crossing the dangerous borders. Even before reaching European shores, many of these people die during the voyage due to cold, hunger, diseases, and calamities.
The said donation will help in funding the EU's first
joint maritime patrol. Other countries involved in the security mission are Britain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, France, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Slovenia, and Netherlands. According to Fontex spokesman Michal Parzyszek, the maritime patrol mission will last not only for a few days, but rather for a longer period of time. Mr. Parzyszek also expects other European countries to make their contributions. Aside from this, the European Union has also announced that it would soon be using robot spyplanes to detect illegal aliens, human-trafficking, and terrorism. Spain, particularly the Canary Islands, and Malta are the hotspots of illegal immigration in Europe.
