
Debates at the US Congress as regards to the comprehensive
immigration law reform proposed by President George W. Bush still continue. However, the test vote conducted by the Senate last Wednesday reflected the increasing chances of the bill. A bruising battle though had to be fought against senators and congressmen who strongly opposed some of the amendments included in the proposed bill.
The Senate then cast a 73-25 vote on the new immigration bill thus limiting debates. The reform was proposed by the US president during a televised speech. The immigration bill included the following proposals namely: the
enforcement of security at the US borders particularly in the US-Mexico border, the implementation of a guest-worker program, and the plan to grant millions of illegal immigrants the opportunity to obtain US citizenship. It must be noted that currently, there are more than 11 million immigrants in the United States.
A bipartisan coalition strongly supported the new immigration bill amidst the attempts of opposing officials to stop its approval. After the successful vote held last Wednesday, supporters were optimistic that the core elements of the bill would survive any remaining opposition. According to them, the Senate would probably pass the new bill before the week ends.
