Based on the article on the LA Times website, each chamber plans more hearings in an effort to sway public opinion and re frame the debate in terms that favor its side. The House conducted a hearing last week in San Diego and Laredo, Texas, that focused on security threats posed by lax enforcement of
immigration laws. The mentioned new round of hearings over the next few weeks are to be held in Washington. However, the session set on July 26th is for the examination of the role of the English language in US society. It also aims to determine whether the Senate measure would undermine efforts to promote its use by immigrants. Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter commented however that he does not believe that the Senate and House are engaged in a dueling hearing, but when the House announced hearings with a critical tone, the Senate thought it was reasonable for them to have a set of hearing of their own. And the never ending battle keeps on.
