Austria, which currently holds the
European Union presidency, recently stated that immigrants who enter the territory of the 25-nation bloc should respect the European values. The issue was raised during a sensitive debate wherein the members discussed issues on how to properly treat the increasing population of Muslim immigrants. According to Austria's Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel, there were certain values that lie at heart of the European Union and that foreigners should adhere or respect these things if they want to become a part of Europe. The Austrian chancellor made this statement after the EU leaders talked about migration issues.
During a meeting with reporters, Mr. Schuessel also said that immigrants should strive to learn the language and adapt themselves to the values, customs, and laws of the country they are entering. The Austrian leader clarified though that the EU does not ask immigrants to give up their
identity or religion in the process of assimilation. It must be noted that some EU members are now considering to introduce integration tests to screen immigrants. Meanwhile, Netherlands has tightened its immigration laws and is requiring immigrants to study the Dutch language as well as the culture for about 375 hours before finally taking a $400 integration exam.
