Malta's Foreign Minister Michael Frendo plans to raise the
illegal immigration issue at the General Affairs and External Relations Council of the European Union, which is currently being held in Luxembourg. The EU foreign ministers are also expected to prepare for the EU-US summit scheduled on June 21. The summit is aimed at discussing relations with Iran. It is particularly focused on its nuclear plans, the peace process in the Middle East, the campaign for democracy, energy issues, and other issues relevant to the ongoing trade discussions at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The assembly is also expected to focus on security issues particularly in Gaza and at the West Bank. Moreover, it will include discussions as regard the assistance to be provided by wealthier nations to the
Palestinian government. Yet Malta's foreign minister is also expected to raise the issue on illegal immigration. It must be noted that illegal immigration has been a growing concern of Europe, specifically by Malta and Spain. Every year, thousands of Africans arrive secretly at their territories. As such, the finance minister plans to call the attention of the entire assembly in order to deal with the problem. Meanwhile, several European nations have already joined forces in order to help Spain and Malta battle against illegal immigration.
